Closer to Christianity

I was baptized, but I’ve never claimed to be Christian. It made more sense to seek out truth independently than inside the walls of a church. The “leap of faith” a Christian takes seemed more like an accepted veil of ignorance for personal comfort than a divine guide. I got so caught up with the unprovable belief that I wrote off all the other qualities Christianity embodies.

Vipassana connected me with the importance of living a moral life. Instead of intellectualizing how morality created the foundation for a safe and functional society, I experienced directly how morality could bring peace and happiness to me personally. Instead of feeling taken advantage of by someone cheating the system, I learned how those people were suffering inside. After a few deep breathes, I can accept that Christianity was trying to teach me these things from the beginning. I need to develop faith to keep listening within even when I’m not sensitive enough to feel the answer. Isn’t that pretty close to what they teach in church?

The second quality is the value of community support to live a wholesome life. I constantly succumb to temptation when I’m alone in the world, but with the support of good friends and family, I more successful with staying on the bath. The Church provides the infrastructure for this social support. By bringing everyone together once a week and revisiting a commitment to morality and wholesome living, many people find the strength to continue walking the path. This is a wonderful thing.

When I first found Vipassana, I thought I had finally found an answer to disprove Christianity. Instead, I’m learning that the foundational values of the Church have been more advanced than my beliefs all along. Now, I’m more Christian than I’ve ever been before.

Christianity as taught during Catechism and prayer service is a religion of rites and rituals. It messes with your head since it is based on fear of eternal damnation. Herein lies its greatest shortcoming because it is embedded in the head and is not deeply heartfelt.

Christianity’s most powerful teaching is emobodied in the word “Agape”. The full meaning of this word is realised during the 3rd stage of Vipassana during Metta (Loving Kindness) meditation when the meditator experiences a fountain of love gushing forth outward towards every sentient being. This is the moment when one becomes most Christ like.

There is a school of thought which suggests Christ immersed himself in eastern mysticism including perhaps in intensive meditation during the 20 year period when he “dropped out” of the Biblical narrative. Love your enemy (it will drive him crazy :-)) is a contra-intuitive teaching that was propounded by Gautama 500 years before Christ.

As a great Vipassana teacher says – those of every faith must take one Vipassana course – then they will become much better Christians, Muslims, Hindus or whatever.

Sadly within all Buddhist countries the lay people are far from encourage to practice Vipassana. Instead in these Buddhist countries the simple teaching of Gautam to end misery by living in the present moment and cultivating agape has been corrupted into mindless worship of Buddha images.

Christianity is so much more than rites and dogmas. The work of Christ goes on a deeper level and solves a problem that vipassana in itself never can solve. Vipassana works on the soul, the flesh, and you can resolve impurities, develop selfcontrol, etc. But the work of Christ on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus. Where He who knew no sin became sin so that we in Him can become the righteousness of God. What this does for a man when he gets born again, the born again Spirit comes to life Christ broke the curse of spiritual death of separation with God. So there for one can practise vipassana but never get to spiritual life, just resolve impurities in the soul. But the justification by the blood of Jesus, the redemption is first in the spirit, and that is a complete gift of grace, received through faith

then the salvation has to be worked out in the soul, the flesh by renewing the mind

Any person who have had an encounter with Jesus, and been born again is a new creation in His spirit man and that connection with God trough the Holy Spirit no word can describe because it has to be experienced.

But as a born again Christian you still have to work out your salvation in the soul, in the flesh to deal with unhealthy behaviour patterns, to get control over the fallen nature and learn to live by the spirit, the fruits of the spirit is joy, peace, love, self-control, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness.

We are created in the image of God so even people who learn to control themselves and purify there soul, can start to reflect the image of God, but one thing that still will be a problem is the legality because there is laws created by God, you have the law of gravity, there is the Law of Sin and death. We are born in to a fallen world, sin, impurities, rebellion etc is the fallen state you can work on that in different ways, one is vipassana but once you have sinned, you have fallen, and we all have fallen short of the glory of God. And this is where the work of Christ really solves, and liberates us from the law of sin and death and brings us into the law of the spirit and life. We’re he broke the curse on the cross. We’re He who knew no sin became sin so that we can become the righteousness of God in Him. This is a free gift. It elevates us and liberates us from spiritual death to spiritual life. From separation from God to relationship with God and enternal life.

Today is the day of Salvation recive the free gift. The bible tells us that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

This takes humility first and foremost to acknowledge that you are not God and that you need salvation from spiritual death, that you need forgiveness and redemption. The bible tells us that God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time

If you want to be born again and recive Christ pray this in sincerity and in faith with your mouth and belive in your heart and you will experience forgivness of sins and spiritual life in relationship with God your new life starts now.

pray this prayer and start a new life in Christ.

    Dear God,
I come to You in the Name of Jesus. I admit that I am not right with You, and I want to be right with You. I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. The Bible says if I confess with my mouth that “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead, I will be saved (Rom. 10:9). I believe with my heart, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is the Lord and Saviour of my life. Thank you for saving me!
In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
